Shark Encounter Off Australian Coast Leaves Father and Son Shaken
A routine fishing trip took a terrifying turn when a large shark began circling and nudging the pair's boat.
A father and son experienced a startling encounter with a shark while fishing off the coast of New South Wales, Australia. Todd Lloyd and his son Flynn were on their boat near Windang Island when a roughly 2.5-meter (8.2 feet) shark appeared and began circling their vessel, WIN News Illawarra reported.
The shark reportedly nudged the boat multiple times, causing fright for the pair. "I’ve only ever seen the little pretty harmless sharks – they’re not very scary – but that one was definitely one you wouldn’t want to see unless you’re on a boat," Flynn told the publication. He added that they had been fishing in the area for a while when the shark began to "stalk" them.
Upon returning to shore, the Lloyds discovered numerous tooth marks on their boat's motor. Todd Lloyd described the shark as surprisingly persistent and aggressive. "It wouldn’t leave us," he said, urging other anglers to be cautious due to the significant activity and aggressive nature of the sharks in the area.
Online reactions to the incident were varied. Some viewers shared similar close encounters with sharks, recounting instances where sharks left teeth marks on their boat motors. Others suggested the shark may have been a young shortfin mako, known to interact with boats. One commenter noted, "Wow, a shark in the ocean. Imagine that."
The incident occurred several months after another widely reported shark encounter off the NSW South Coast, where two boaters described being circled by a great white shark while near a dead whale carcass. Their humorous interview about the experience, which included a quip about a "code brown," gained viral attention.
