Shania Twain, 60, has pushed back against critics who have labeled her stage outfits as "trashy" and "tacky." The "Still the One" hitmaker addressed body-shaming comments that surfaced after a recent performance at London's Wembley Stadium, where she wore a revealing black lace dress.
Twain acknowledged that she experienced a body-image crisis during her 2019 Las Vegas residency, a period she attributes in part to menopause. "I go from being this young, stunning figure, beautiful skin, everything’s in the right place [to a] time in my life where I couldn’t look in the mirror because all I could see were imperfections and not wanting to be that curvy thing," she shared in an interview with People.
During her Las Vegas residency, Twain sustained an injury where she tore two muscles in her thigh, an incident she now attributes to dehydration, malnourishment from restrictive dieting, and the effects of menopause, including "bloat" she didn't understand. "I wasn’t drinking enough water, I was not eating enough protein, and I was really going through a raging period of menopause," she explained, noting a "perfect storm for disaster."
In the years since, Twain has focused on accepting her changing body and embracing aging. "Vanity is not worth torture. I’m just learning every phase that I go through, and I adapt," she stated. "I’m not trying to be 30. I’m not trying to be 25, and I won’t be ever again."
The recent criticism followed a viral TikTok clip of Twain performing "Man! I Feel Like a Woman!" at Wembley Stadium. Social media users reacted negatively to her outfit and performance, with comments ranging from "so tacky" to comparing her attire to "something you might find in a Frederick's of Hollywood catalog."
However, Twain emphasized her resilience against such commentary. "My body is not shameable. That courage comes with time and maturity," she insisted. "Body shaming is nothing that’s going to affect me."
This is not the first time Twain has faced online scrutiny for her fashion choices. She also received criticism for two daring ensembles worn at the 2023 CMT Awards. At the time, she responded on Instagram, stating, "Life is too short to wear boring clothes!! Thank you to the team behind my @cmt #CMTAwards looks."
