Shanahan Explains Purdy's Sideline Outburst
49ers head coach clarifies comments made by quarterback during Monday night's game.

San Francisco 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan has addressed social media speculation surrounding a moment during Monday night's game against the Washington Commanders where quarterback Brock Purdy appeared to yell at him. A clip of Purdy turning to the sideline and exclaiming, "Hey Kyle!" went viral, with many interpreting it as a sign of discord.
Shanahan, however, explained the situation on Wednesday, stating that Purdy's yell was not a critique of play-calling speed but a request for the play to be repeated. According to Shanahan, the communication system can be cut off at 15 seconds, and Purdy was often yelling because he needed the play call again before it was too late.
"Yeah, it’s actually not to call a play faster. It’s, ‘I need it again,’ and it gets cutoff at 15 [seconds],” Shanahan said. “Sometimes no one can hear it. I always call a play and I just walk, and think. I don’t always watch the huddle. A lot of times, Mac [Jones] or someone will say, ‘We didn’t get it, it was chopped’ or somebody yells, ‘Brock’s yelling at you,’ which I can’t always hear. But I did hear him a couple times in this game, and I look up and try to do it again as long as it’s not past 15 seconds."
Shanahan added that sometimes he doesn't receive confirmation that the play call was missed until after the 15-second mark, leading to confusion when Purdy hears only part of the repeated play.
The clarification dispels the notion of any significant disconnect between the coach and quarterback, attributing the exchange to the technical limitations of the play-calling system.
