Shanahan Disappointed by Greenlaw's Suspension, Will Appeal

San Francisco 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan stated his disappointment Monday morning following the NFL's decision to suspend linebacker Dre Greenlaw for one game. Greenlaw was ejected from Sunday's game against the Seattle Seahawks after using his helmet to headbutt Seahawks linebacker Ernest Jones IV on the sideline.

"I was disappointed they decided to do that. But it is what it is. I just found out a little bit ago. Just disappointed, but you’ve got to deal with it," Shanahan told Evan Webeck of The Post. The 49ers, currently 5-0, will be without Greenlaw for an upcoming game.

The incident occurred in the second quarter when Greenlaw delivered a late hit on Seahawks quarterback Sam Darnold after Darnold went out of bounds. Greenlaw was immediately ejected and subsequently confronted by the Seahawks' bench. During the exchange, Greenlaw headbutted Jones IV, who then pushed Greenlaw back. Despite the loss of Greenlaw, the 49ers secured a 32-29 victory over Seattle.

Shanahan confirmed that an appeal process is available for Greenlaw, which he plans to utilize. "I was told there’s an appeal process tomorrow. I was also told a couple hours ago that he was suspended," Shanahan said. "I’m assuming he is. Hopefully the appeal process can go better tomorrow and we can get that rescinded, but we’ll see how that goes."

This is not the first sideline interaction for Greenlaw this season. In Week 4, he received a $11,941 fine for a verbal exchange with Denver Broncos coach Sean Payton, a former head coach of Greenlaw.

Greenlaw has been a significant contributor to the 49ers' defense this season, recording 37 tackles and one forced fumble.
