Sex and the City Creator Hopes for Carrie Bradshaw's Return
Candace Bushnell expresses disappointment over the cancellation of 'And Just Like That,' citing financial losses and the end of Carrie's story.
Candace Bushnell, the visionary behind the "Sex and the City" franchise, has expressed her disappointment with the conclusion of its spin-off series, "And Just Like That." The series' director, Michael Patrick King, had announced the show's end, stating it felt like a "wonderful place to stop." Bushnell, however, finds the cancellation disheartening, particularly due to the financial implications. "I am disappointed because I got money, and I got a credit, so it’s, like, damn, that’s a loss of a few hundred-thousand dollars," she commented.
Bushnell, whose New York Observer columns served as the basis for the original "Sex and the City" book, television series, and subsequent films, also lamented the conclusion of the character Carrie Bradshaw's narrative. "I do wish that it had continued for that reason, but also that’s the end of Carrie as well," she stated.
"Sex and the City" originally aired in 1998, chronicling the lives of four New York women: Carrie (Sarah Jessica Parker), Miranda (Cynthia Nixon), Charlotte (Kristin Davis), and Samantha (Kim Cattrall). Cattrall did not reprise her role for "And Just Like That," which featured the remaining trio.
Speaking at the Cliveden Literary Festival, Bushnell, 67, voiced her belief that the franchise still has potential. "I feel like they could make another movie or something like that. I still hold out some hope," she said. Should Carrie make a return, Bushnell believes Sarah Jessica Parker's continued enthusiasm for the character would be crucial. "God bless Sarah Jessica Parker because she went out every night," Bushnell remarked on Parker's promotional efforts. "She dressed up, and she really brought a lot of publicity and attention to the show, and has continued to want to play that character, which is fantastic because you know a lot of the time actresses don’t want to stay in the same role. It’s really been a blessing."
