Seven Arrested in Birmingham City Centre Firework Disorder
West Midlands Police detain individuals aged 15-26 following incidents on Corporation Street.
Seven individuals have been arrested following disorder involving fireworks in Birmingham's city centre. The arrests, made on Corporation Street and Stephenson Street, involved people aged between 15 and 26. They are being held on suspicion of offenses including assault, possession of fireworks, and possession of an offensive weapon.
Footage shared on social media depicted crowds gathering on Corporation Street, with fireworks being discharged near police officers and vehicles. West Midlands Police stated that officers responded to "pockets of disorder" where fireworks were being used in a dangerous manner.
In response to the events, officers utilized Section 60 stop-and-search powers, which permit searches without requiring reasonable grounds. The arrested individuals remain in custody for ongoing questioning.
West Midlands Police had previously warned of firm action against those involved in fireworks-related disorder. This warning followed serious incidents in the city during Bonfire Night of the previous year. On November 6, 2023, 21 people were arrested after officers were attacked with fireworks on Dale End and Staniforth Street. The force had deployed additional officers to key locations to prevent a recurrence of last year's violence. Ch Supt Tom Boyce emphasized that misusing fireworks is not only dangerous but also illegal, carrying potential consequences such as fines, arrest, and criminal charges.
