Server Sparks Outrage Online After Criticizing Diner's Small Tip

A server in Charlotte, North Carolina, has drawn widespread criticism after publicly shaming a customer for leaving a $2 tip on a substantial tab, fueling the ongoing debate about tipping practices in the U.S. Margaret Kennelly, who works as a server, posted a video on TikTok detailing her dissatisfaction with the gratuity.

In the video, Kennelly recounted a customer telling her, "You look so mean." She responded, "You tipped me $2 on an $825 tab." Her accompanying caption read, "Y'all can clear those plates actually."

The clip, set to Katy Perry's "The One That Got Away," quickly garnered over 1.7 million views. In a subsequent video, Kennelly sat in her car and listed her expenses, including car payments, insurance, maintenance, and gas, illustrating the financial pressures faced by service industry workers.

However, Kennelly's stance on tipping was met with considerable backlash in the comments section. Many viewers argued that tipping is not an obligation and that servers should not expect additional money for performing their job duties. Some suggested that servers should focus their energy on advocating for higher base wages rather than criticizing customers.

This incident comes amidst growing public sentiment against current tipping norms. A nationwide survey released earlier this year indicated that 78 percent of Americans find tipping culture to be excessive. The survey also revealed that nearly half of respondents have reduced their gratuities in 2026 due to increasing household budget pressures. Retail analyst Neil Saunders commented on the findings, noting that consumers are increasingly frustrated by both the amount expected in tips and the expanding number of situations where tipping is solicited.
