Serial Killer Fears Grip Michigan College Town Amid River Trail Deaths

Lansing, Michigan – Fears of a potential serial killer have gripped a college town as authorities investigate five deaths linked to the popular Lansing River Trail over the past year. The Lansing Police Department announced it is examining the fatalities, with indications that a suspect may have been targeting and attacking individuals at night.

The Michigan State University Department of Police and Public Safety has responded by reinforcing security measures on its portion of the trail. These enhancements include additional LED lighting, the installation of Green Light emergency phones equipped with public safety cameras, and routine bicycle patrols by MSU Police Officers. Students are being urged to remain vigilant, especially when using the trail after dark.

River Trail Deaths and Investigation

Among the victims was 22-year-old Daniel Lusk, found fatally stabbed under the East Michigan Avenue bridge on August 20, a location less than a mile from the MSU campus. Police arrested Edward Joseph Smith, 23, on September 3 in connection with Lusk's stabbing, though Smith has not been accused of involvement in the other four deaths.

Criminologists note the difficulty in investigating such cases, particularly when victims lack consistent daily routines or digital footprints. Dr. David Hayes, a criminologist, pointed out that if the cases are connected, it represents a tragic instance of a killer preying on vulnerable individuals. Reports suggest all identified victims are homeless White men.

Lansing Mayor Andy Schor stated that the Lansing River Trail and the downtown area remain safe, citing a significant increase in police presence along the trail and in the downtown district at all hours. The investigation remains active and ongoing.
