Serbia Inaugurates Israeli Drone Assembly Factory
President Aleksandar Vucic announced the opening of a new facility aimed at boosting the country's military capabilities and producing advanced equipment.
Serbia's President Aleksandar Vucic announced on Thursday the inauguration of an assembly factory for Israeli-made drones in the Balkan nation, a move intended to enhance its military strength.
Vucic had revealed in April that Serbia would begin producing combat drones in collaboration with Israel. Regional news outlet BIRN reported in the same month that Serbia's state arms producer, Yugoimport SDPR, was set to establish a drone plant with the Israeli company Elbit Systems.
According to an Instagram post by Vucic, the new factory is expected to employ approximately 100 individuals and will manufacture "the most modern equipment" for the Serbian military, as well as for the armed forces of select other countries.
Details regarding the factory's specific operations remain undisclosed. Vucic cited the "confidentiality of the production process" as the reason for not inviting the press to the inauguration.
"Our plans are huge," Vucic stated in his post. "We believe that we will open with our Israeli partners at least three more factories throughout Serbia."
Videos shared on Instagram depicted the president touring the facility and demonstrating the operation of a drone. Vucic remarked on the drones' efficiency, noting their ability to "go through the windows and chase the opponent."
He expressed satisfaction with the country's technological advancement, adding that warheads for these drones will be produced at Serbia's Krusik weapons factory. During the video, Vucic is also seen observing a Serbian employee explain the drone's functions.
This development occurs as Serbia seeks to modernize its military. In 2024, the country ordered 12 French-made Rafale jets. Belgrade has also acquired military hardware from China and Russia, maintaining close ties with these nations despite its official aspiration to join the European Union.
Serbia's government has been actively working to strengthen its armed forces, acquiring equipment from various international partners. The country previously purchased military drones from Turkey.
