A senior detective in Derbyshire, England, is under investigation for potential gross misconduct involving the use of artificial intelligence. The Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) confirmed it has launched an investigation into the officer after Derbyshire Police made a voluntary referral following an internal review.
This development comes two months after a separate criminal investigation was initiated into another officer accused of employing AI systems to fabricate evidence in multiple cases. Derbyshire Police stated that the referral to the IOPC was made on June 23. The force indicated that the IOPC is leading the investigation independently and declined to comment further.
According to reports, the case involves a detective chief inspector alleged to have utilized AI to maintain “decision logs.” These logs are crucial in investigations, documenting the rationale behind each procedural step. Such records are subject to disclosure for scrutiny by defense lawyers during court proceedings.
