Republican Senator Thom Tillis has called for President Trump to replace Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth, citing "inept management" and the creation of a "leadership void" within the military.

Tillis argued that Hegseth is forcing talented leaders and flag officers into retirement, hindering the Pentagon's effectiveness. "If we had a @SecWar who maintained the same priorities and forward-thinking, he would be fighting to retain talented leaders like Dan and the many flag officers he has forced into retirement," Tillis stated in a social media post. "Instead, he is creating a leadership void at the top of our military ranks."

Among the high-ranking officials reportedly ousted or who have stepped down since Hegseth assumed leadership of the Defense Department is Gen. Randy George, who was serving as the Army Chief of Staff. Hegseth reportedly requested George's immediate retirement in the spring. Tillis's post included a link to a CBS News article detailing approximately 20 military and civilian leaders who have departed under Hegseth's tenure.

Tillis voted to confirm Hegseth as Defense Secretary last year, despite initial reservations. His confirmation was contentious, with three other Republicans voting against the nomination. Vice President J.D. Vance cast the tiebreaking vote, marking the narrowest margin for a Defense Secretary confirmation since the role was established in 1947, according to Senate records.
