Senator Slotkin Faces Criticism Over Remarks on Deterring Trump Administration Hires
Michigan Democrat Elissa Slotkin's comments about wanting young people to fear legal repercussions for working in a potential future Trump administration have drawn sharp criticism.
Sen. Elissa Slotkin, D-Mich., is facing backlash after stating that she hopes the prospect of legal trouble will deter young people from taking positions in a future Trump administration. The remarks were made during an event at the University of Chicago on Oct. 13, where Slotkin discussed her political career and the future of the Democratic Party.
"I want to look at these signature cases and not just focus on the president, but on the people who enabled him," Slotkin said during the event. "I want young people coming out of school to say, should I go work for the Trump administration? Like, that sounds fun, I might get an opportunity. I want them to be like, Lord, that might be buying myself a ton of problems that I don’t want, and so let me avoid participating in that. I want that deterrence message."
These comments, which circulated online, led to accusations that Slotkin was advocating for political prosecutions to discourage public service. Jonathan Turley, a law professor, criticized the remarks on X, stating that Slotkin had "said the quiet part out loud" and was attempting to deter potential administration employees.
Scott Kupor, director of the U.S. Office of Personnel Management, called Slotkin's comments "disappointing and unprofessional." He stated on X that it is "incredibly disappointing and unprofessional coming from a U.S. senator—endorsing political prosecutions to dissuade patriotic Americans from serving their country." Kupor contrasted this with OPM's mission to "recruit the best and brightest early-career prospects."
One University of Chicago student, Michael Bicksel, who identified as conservative, stated that Slotkin's remarks made him and other conservative students feel they could face political persecution for serving in a Trump administration. He characterized her tactics as "Bolshevik-style."
The debate over Slotkin's statements occurred amidst discussions surrounding former President Barack Obama's criticism of the Trump administration's scrutiny of Rep. Ilhan Omar, D-Minn. Obama argued that Omar was being targeted for her political views and that such intimidation tactics should outrage all Americans.
Some observers noted a parallel between Obama's criticism of investigations into Omar and Slotkin's call for scrutiny of potential Trump administration officials. Omar is currently subject to federal inquiries related to her immigration paperwork and financial disclosures.
Slotkin's remarks have become part of a broader discussion about how Democrats might wield power if they gain control of Congress in upcoming elections.
