Senator Marco Rubio hosted a reception at the State Department on July 2 to launch a limited edition passport commemorating America's 250th birthday. Among the attendees was Nick Rekieta, a YouTube personality known for covering legal proceedings. Rekieta, who is currently serving a probationary sentence for a felony drug possession charge, stated that he and his family were personally invited to the event by a friend working at the State Department. He also mentioned that he disclosed his legal situation and was informed it would not be an issue, though he expressed uncertainty about the background check criteria for attendees.
The event, held in the Benjamin Franklin Room, featured the unveiling of a special passport design that includes an image and signature of former President Donald Trump, marking the first time a living president has been featured on a U.S. passport. Rekieta, his wife Kayla, and their five children each received one of these documents. Rekieta described the passports as "Trump-embossed."
Rekieta's presence at the event marks a significant turn from his legal troubles. In May 2024, law enforcement officers raided his home in Spicer, Minnesota, discovering cocaine, ketamine, a digital scale, and a rifle. He was initially charged with felony drug possession and child endangerment, among other offenses. He pleaded guilty in January 2025 to a reduced third-degree possession charge, while his wife's charges were dismissed. He was sentenced to 30 days in jail, five years of supervised probation, and community service. His probation conditions include random drug testing and requiring permission from his supervising officer to leave Minnesota.
Rekieta acknowledged his past mistakes, telling the Daily Mail, "America is the land of opportunity, and part of that opportunity is the opportunity to be redeemed. People aren't beholden to their past." He added that everyone deserves "the courtesy of being allowed to move on" from "mistakes or bad decisions."
The limited edition passports are being issued in a run of 25,000 nationwide. Attendees at the reception paid the standard fee for the documents. The event featured remarks from Rubio, who called the passport a "tremendous source of pride" and a "lifeline for a lot of people." He also shared that he had personally presented one to former President Trump, who reportedly "loved it."
The State Department and the White House declined to comment on the matter. Rekieta's law license expired in October, which he attributed to his legal issues and unfinished coursework, stating he intends to rectify the situation.
