Senator Pocock Slams Albanese's Defense of 'Dirt File' on MP Haines
Independent Senator David Pocock calls Prime Minister's office's actions 'underhanded' and demands accountability.
Independent Senator David Pocock has criticized Prime Minister Anthony Albanese's defense of a document questioning the integrity of federal MP Helen Haines, labeling the Prime Minister's office's actions as 'underhanded'.
The controversy surrounds a document circulated by Albanese's office to journalists shortly after Haines had criticized a $6 million grant awarded to Marrickville Golf Club in Sydney. The document, while not alleging wrongdoing by Haines, raised questions about her critique of the grant and suggested reporters explore possible lines of inquiry regarding funding requests in her electorate.
Albanese had previously dismissed suggestions of a personal attack, stating the document merely illustrated that "people of integrity stand up for their electorate." However, Pocock, a fellow Independent politician, rejected this explanation.
"Dr Haines' integrity is beyond question. Helen is one of the most principled people I know," Pocock told The Australian on Thursday. "It seems clear that staff in the Prime Minister's office have been caught engaging in underhanded behaviour."
Pocock added, "Trying to explain this away rather than acknowledging what happened, taking responsibility and apologising is not good enough. Whether or not this behaviour was authorised, it was wrong, and there should be accountability."
Dr. Haines is currently in critical condition at Melbourne's Alfred Hospital after undergoing amputation of both her legs. These injuries were sustained in an alleged attack on Monday afternoon. Brendan Nugent, 43, is accused of deliberately striking her with his four-wheel drive outside Haines' electorate office in Wangaratta. Nugent appeared in court on Wednesday, facing charges including dangerous driving causing serious harm. His lawyer expressed concerns about his client's psychological well-being and requested an assessment. Nugent did not apply for bail and was remanded in custody.
