Senator Payman Sparks Fury With Staffing Question Referencing Helen Haines Incident

Independent Western Australian Senator Fatima Payman has faced significant backlash after questioning whether Prime Minister Anthony Albanese was awaiting a security incident similar to one involving Helen Haines before approving her request for additional staff.

Payman made the remarks late Monday night while pressing Special Minister of State Don Farrell regarding her nearly two-year-long request for two extra adviser-level staff members. She highlighted that other crossbench senators had received more support, prompting her to question if her former Labor affiliation was the reason for the delay.

"Has the Prime Minister refused to make a decision on my request because, unlike all the other defectors, I defected from the Labor Party?" Payman asked. "Am I being made an example of?"

Under parliamentary regulations, the Prime Minister holds the ultimate authority on staffing allocations for independent senators and minor parties. Payman expressed frustration with the ongoing wait, stating her current staff were struggling to manage an workload equivalent to a seven-person office and that "Labor keeps bragging about 'same job, same pay' but it doesn't apply to my team."

She then posed the question that ignited the controversy: "Is the Prime Minister waiting for something like what happened to Helen Haines to occur in my office, or to me, before he takes our request seriously?"

Minister Farrell immediately rebuked the suggestion, calling it an "outrageous suggestion, Senator Payman." Committee chair Karen Grogan echoed this sentiment, labeling the remark "outrageous" and urging Payman to reconsider.

Farrell requested that Payman withdraw the comment, stating, "I suggest you go further and withdraw that suggestion about the Prime Minister's motivation because it's absolutely not the case." However, Payman refused, asserting, "With all due respect, I haven't made any accusation." When Grogan interjected that she had, Payman retorted, "I mean, you can take it as an accusation, Minister. But once you've discussed it with the Prime Minister, and if he thinks that's an accusation, then I'll withdraw it."

The exchange escalated as Payman accused Albanese of deliberate delay, stating, "I've been waiting for two years, Chair, and I am tired of looking my staff in the eyes and telling them they'll just have to deal with this because the Prime Minister is petty and is taking it out on me." Grogan condemned the comment, suggesting Payman should "be better than that."

Payman's comments come amid a period of heightened security concerns for independent senators. She has previously reported over 100 threatening or abusive incidents to the Australian Federal Police, including death threats. Last week, a Queensland man pleaded guilty to charges including menacing or harassing Payman, and a Victorian man admitted to sending an email threatening her life.

Minister Farrell stated he would raise Payman's staffing issue with Prime Minister Albanese again. Payman's office has previously confirmed referring more than 100 threatening or abusive incidents to the Australian Federal Police.
