South Carolina Republican Senator Lindsey Graham died Sunday at the age of 71. His office announced his passing in the early hours of Sunday, citing a "sudden illness." Preliminary findings from the District of Columbia's medical examiner's office indicated the cause of death was "Aortic Dissection due to Arteriosclerotic Cardiovascular Disease," a condition involving a tear in the body's main artery that primarily affects older men.

Graham reportedly complained of feeling unwell on Saturday, hours before his death, following a trip to Ukraine. According to Axios, he joked, "I can’t die now. I still need to do the Russia sanctions, get Iran sorted out and do Israeli-Saudi normalization." He had recently discussed the bipartisan Russian sanctions package he was spearheading with Senator Richard Blumenthal (D-CT) with President Donald Trump. Blumenthal stated that passing the bill would be a "fitting tribute" to Graham, describing him as "tireless in pursuing freedom for Ukraine."

Graham was also actively pursuing a deal for Israeli-Saudi normalization before the swearing-in of the new Congress in January 2027. He had reportedly been planning trips to Israel and Saudi Arabia to explore the possibility of talks, with the aim of starting intensive discussions in September and reaching a framework by November. Saudi Arabia has consistently stated that it will not normalize relations with Israel until an independent Palestinian state is established.

Graham's tenure in the Senate was marked by a complex political evolution, particularly in his relationship with Donald Trump. Initially a vocal critic of Trump during the 2016 presidential campaign, Graham later became one of his staunchest allies in the Senate, defending him during impeachment trials and supporting his challenges to the 2020 election results. He was also a key supporter of Trump's foreign policy decisions, including military action against Iran.

Graham's public career spanned many years, during which he served on key committees and played a significant role in foreign policy and national security debates. His advocacy for Ukraine and his work on sanctions against Russia were among his recent legislative priorities. Colleagues remembered his determination and compassion in his public service.
