Senator Klobuchar Urges Increased Anti-Terrorism Funding After Mall of America Plot Foiled
Klobuchar highlights the need for coordinated investments in law enforcement following the arrest of an individual accused of planning an ISIS-inspired attack.
Sen. Amy Klobuchar expressed gratitude for law enforcement's actions in preventing a potential mass shooting and terrorist attack at the Mall of America, following the FBI's arrest of an 18-year-old man. The suspect is accused of plotting an ISIS-inspired attack and had pledged allegiance to the terrorist group.
Klobuchar, who has represented Minnesota in the U.S. Senate since 2007, stated that the incident underscores the necessity of "major coordinated investments in anti-terrorism and local law enforcement." She emphasized the importance of a proactive approach, stating, "Our state must take terrorism and violent crime head on, working with our federal law enforcement and local police departments to keep Minnesotans safe."
According to federal court documents, the suspect, identified as Sheikhdoon Abdullahi Mohamud, allegedly discussed attack plans for months before acquiring an AK-47-style rifle, four magazines, and approximately 200 rounds of ammunition from an undercover FBI employee. While the rifle was rendered inoperable, the ammunition was live.
FBI Director Kash Patel commented on the arrest, stating that Mohamud "allegedly obtained a weapon he hoped to use in a mass casualty attack in support of ISIS, but this FBI arrested him and put a stop to his plans."
Former President Donald Trump also acknowledged the FBI's role, telling reporters, "I did hear about it. And they did a great job. The FBI did a great job."
Mohamud faces charges including knowingly receiving a firearm and ammunition with the intent to commit a felony and engaging in a federal crime of terrorism. The arrest occurred as Klobuchar is in the midst of a campaign for Minnesota governor, facing Republican Minnesota House Speaker Lisa Demuth in the November election.
