U.S. Senator Chris Murphy of Connecticut was hospitalized on Saturday after suffering a stroke, according to a statement from his team. The 53-year-old Democrat began experiencing “numbness in his arm” at his son’s hockey game and was taken to a hospital, where it was determined he had had a stroke.
Doctors are reportedly encouraged by his progress, and his team expressed optimism for a full recovery, stating he is awake and alert. Murphy, who is not up for re-election in the current midterm cycle, has been actively campaigning for fellow Democrats across the country.
Murphy, who has served in the Senate since 2013 and previously in the House of Representatives, has been a proponent of progressive causes including affordable healthcare, international human rights, and gun safety. He had been scheduled to travel to New Hampshire on Sunday for campaign events.
Several other senators have experienced strokes in recent years, including Ben Ray Lujan and Chris Van Hollen in 2022, and John Fetterman. Fetterman, who also survived a stroke, offered his well wishes to Murphy and his family on social media, stating, "My family is rooting for Chris and his family for a full and speedy recovery."
