Senator Bill Cassidy, R-La., has strongly criticized a recent executive order signed by former President Donald Trump that seeks to alter childhood vaccine recommendations, particularly regarding the spacing of the measles, mumps, and rubella (MMR) vaccine.

Cassidy, who is also a medical doctor, stated on social media platform X that Trump "does not have the expertise" to implement such changes. He urged parents to prioritize the advice of their child's pediatrician over the executive order.

Trump's order, signed earlier on Monday, advocates for splitting the MMR vaccine into three separate doses administered during different medical visits. This aligns with Trump's long-held view that vaccines should be spaced out more. During a press conference announcing the order, Trump made unsubstantiated claims about the MMR vaccine, describing it as potentially "lethal" and later as "explosive."

Public health experts and other medical professionals have voiced concerns similar to Cassidy's. They argue that spacing out vaccinations could lead to children being exposed to preventable diseases before completing their immunization schedule. Cassidy also countered Trump's assertions, stating that altering vaccine schedules would necessitate more shots for children to achieve the same level of protection, potentially increasing hesitancy and compromising safety.

The order has been linked to ongoing efforts by Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr., who has promoted unproven claims about a connection between vaccines and autism. Cassidy affirmed the scientific consensus, emphasizing that vaccines are safe, effective, and do not cause autism. "Parents should listen to their child’s pediatrician about vaccines rather than listening to an inaccurate executive order," Cassidy stated. "This is so wrong."

A White House spokesperson, Kush Desai, told HuffPost that the executive order was based on an HHS vaccine safety assessment that was driven by "Gold Standard Science." HHS did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
