Senate Probe Finds Iranian Regime Leveraged Tether Stablecoin

Iranian government-affiliated actors have extensively used the stablecoin Tether (USDT) for financial activities, according to a months-long investigation by Senate Democrats. The probe found that wallets sanctioned for ties to Iran overwhelmingly conducted transactions using Tether's USDT, a digital currency pegged to the U.S. dollar.

The findings, detailed in a report from Senate Democrats, indicate a significant reliance on the stablecoin by entities facing international sanctions. The investigation focused on identifying how sanctioned Iranian actors accessed and utilized the global financial system, with a particular emphasis on digital assets.

Tether has stated that it cooperates with law enforcement and has taken steps to block access to its services for sanctioned individuals and entities. However, the Senate report suggests that illicit actors have found ways to circumvent these measures, using USDT to facilitate transactions that would otherwise be difficult under traditional financial sanctions regimes.
