Senate Confirms Sonderling as Labor Secretary Ahead of Midterm Campaigns

The Senate confirmed Keith Sonderling as the head of the Department of Labor on Wednesday, with a vote of 47-41. Sonderling has been serving as the acting secretary since April and has held various positions within the department throughout his career. His confirmation comes as senators prepare to campaign for the upcoming midterm elections.

Sonderling was selected for the permanent role following the departure of former Secretary Lori Chavez-DeRemer, who left to pursue opportunities in the private sector. Chavez-DeRemer's exit followed allegations of abusing her position.

Sonderling previously served as a senior advisor within the department during President Trump's first term and later as a Republican member of the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission. He also has experience as an adjunct professor at George Washington University, teaching about labor laws. He returned to the department during Trump's second term, and was confirmed as deputy secretary in March of the previous year.

Sen. Bill Cassidy, R-La., expressed confidence in Sonderling's qualifications, stating that he is expected to protect workers, support job creation, and help navigate the evolving workforce, particularly concerning AI advancements. Democrats, however, voiced opposition, citing disagreements with the administration's policies managed by the department, including certain grant programs at Labor which aligns with the administration's broader goal of potentially closing the Department of Education.

The Department of Labor's primary mission is to uphold federal labor laws, ensuring workers have access to fair, safe, and healthy working conditions.

Sonderling was a senior advisor in the department during Trump’s first term and was confirmed as deputy secretary in March of last year during Trump’s second term.
