Sen. Fetterman Jokingly Calls Himself a 'Lifelong Republican,' Sparks Laughter

Sen. John Fetterman, D-PA, prompted laughter from the audience at the Texas Tribune Festival on Saturday when he mistakenly referred to himself as a "lifelong Republican." The moment occurred when an attendee questioned why Fetterman does not run as an independent.

"Because I’m a lifelong Republican," Fetterman said, before quickly correcting himself and acknowledging the gaffe. "I guarantee you that will break through. That will get clipped."

Earlier in the event, Fetterman delivered a keynote address where he discussed his criticisms of both major political parties. He stated that he has "no path as a Republican" but acknowledged that his willingness to work across the aisle frustrates some Democrats.

"If the Democratic Party votes me out or expels me, they’re always entitled to do that," he said.

Fetterman has previously indicated that he might leave the Democratic Party if it moved too far left, particularly on issues related to Israel. He has also drawn attention for his outreach to Republicans, including introducing Sen. Dave McCormick, R-PA, at a Republican National Committee event.

Despite these instances, Fetterman has consistently reaffirmed his Democratic affiliation since his 2022 election to the Senate, where he won a narrow victory over Dr. Mehmet Oz. He has often challenged the direction of the Democratic Party, particularly concerning progressive policy stances.
