TRENTON, N.J. — Sen. Cory Booker announced on Sept. 3 that he is engaged to his girlfriend, Alexis Lewis, sharing photographs of the couple on Instagram and describing the moment as a source of deep gratitude and joy.
Booker, 56, posted five photos showing the couple smiling and wearing leis, including an image taken on a beach. "I am savoring the soul-affirming wonder of everyday life with my partner, best friend, and now my fiancée," he wrote. "We are excited for this journey ahead, having so much fun, and feeling deeply grateful for the love, support, and energy so many of you have shared with us."
Booker has never been married. He and Lewis have been living together in Washington, he told the Washington Examiner earlier this year, and his personal life has drawn public attention in the past, including a previous relationship with actress Rosario Dawson.
A Democrat and former presidential candidate, Booker was first elected to the Senate in a 2013 special election and won full terms in 2014 and 2020. He served as mayor of Newark, the state's largest city, before joining the Senate.
Booker returned to the national spotlight in April with a record-setting speech on the Senate floor that lasted more than 25 hours and criticized the agenda of President Donald Trump during his second term. At a later town hall in Paramus, N.J., Booker said he was focused on running for reelection to the Senate in 2026 and that any discussion of a 2028 presidential bid would "take care of itself."
The engagement announcement comes as Booker continues his work in the Senate on issues ranging from criminal justice reform to urban development and public health. His office did not immediately provide additional details about wedding plans or a timeline for the couple.
The Instagram post drew responses from colleagues, constituents and members of the public on social media. Booker’s statement emphasized personal gratitude and a sense of partnership as he balances a public career with his private life.
