Selma Blair Details Hollywood Fallout After Anti-Islam Comment
Actress says a February 2024 comment led to lost representation, brand deals, and friendships.
Actress Selma Blair stated that a February 2024 Instagram comment she made regarding the Israel-Hamas war resulted in the loss of her representation, brand partnerships, and friendships. Blair shared that her entire team, including her agency, lawyer, publicist, and book agent, were gone within a day of the comment being posted.
Blair's remarks came during the Anti-Defamation League's State of the Arts reception at The Jewish Museum in New York. The comment, which has since been deleted, was a reply to a post by immigration reform advocate Abraham Hamra. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Blair wrote, "Deport all these terrorist supporting goons. Islam has destroyed Muslim countries and then they come here and destroyed minds. They know they are liars. Twisted justifications. May they meet their fate."
Blair stated that she apologized shortly after the comment drew backlash, but the fallout was severe. "The brands I worked with were gone within a day," she said. "A few partnerships I’d spent years building were shelved. My agency was gone. My lawyer was gone. My publicist was gone. My book agent was gone. My book publicist was gone. My social media manager was gone. No one returned my calls."
Despite the professional repercussions, Blair expressed that she has rebuilt her career and is not seeking sympathy. She mentioned that the ordeal also impacted her teenage son, who witnessed her fear during the fallout. "The boy in that Christmas photograph watched his mother get scared of the world," Blair recounted. "A boy who had already watched his mother go through chemotherapy and a bone marrow transplant, not knowing if she was coming back to him. He's a teenager now. He's supposed to be embarrassed by me, not frightened for me. Careers come back. Years of his childhood do not."
Blair alluded to recent controversies involving celebrities' political stances, referencing rapper Macklemore's removal from Ed Sheeran's U.S. tour due to his anti-Israel remarks and a petition against singer Pink. Blair criticized what she described as the targeting of an artist who raises money for children.
Looking ahead, Blair announced she is working on a documentary about antisemitism titled "Hineni," which she translated as "Here I am." She concluded by stating, "Antisemitism has to stop. Not be managed. Not be explained. Not be weighed against something else. Stop."
Blair is also attached to the upcoming film "Schmoolie the Deathwatcher."
