Selena Gomez Plans for Children Amidst Medical Challenges
The actress and entrepreneur revealed her hopes to eventually have children, a prospect she has previously described as complicated by medical conditions.
Selena Gomez has shared her future aspirations to start a family, stating she will "eventually" have children. The 34-year-old entertainer discussed her plans during a recent appearance at the Fast Company Innovation Festival in New York City.
Gomez, who married music producer Benny Blanco in late 2025, spoke about the importance of destigmatizing conversations around family planning and mental health.
"I have a 13-year-old sister who means the world to me, and eventually I'll have my own children, and this is something that I don't want to be taboo," Gomez said during the festival. She expressed pride in the work of her mental health-focused non-profit, the Rare Impact Fund, and its potential to make a difference.
This sentiment follows a 2024 interview with Vanity Fair, where Gomez disclosed that she is unable to carry her own children due to medical reasons. "I haven’t ever said this," she stated at the time, "but I unfortunately can’t carry my own children." She explained that her medical conditions posed significant risks to both her life and a potential baby's, a reality she had to come to terms with.
Despite the challenges, Gomez remains determined to become a mother. "Although my path to motherhood will look different," she told Vanity Fair, "it’s not necessarily the way I envisioned it. I thought it would happen the way it happens for everyone."
Gomez indicated that surrogacy or adoption are viable options for her. "I’m in a much better place with that. I find it a blessing that there are wonderful people willing to do surrogacy or adoption, which are both huge possibilities for me," she said. "At the end of the day, I don’t care. It’ll be mine. It’ll be my baby."
During the Fast Company Innovation Festival, Gomez also touched upon the growth of her business ventures and her leadership philosophy. She emphasized the importance of treating people with respect and maintaining open communication within her teams.
"Good leadership for me begins with how I treat people. So everyone in my office, if anyone is disrespecting someone, it does not fly for me," Gomez stated. She believes in finding common ground and addressing disagreements constructively.
Gomez and Blanco are approaching their first wedding anniversary on September 27.
