Selena Gomez Attributes Voice Change to Vaping Addiction

Selena Gomez revealed that her voice has been permanently altered due to years of vaping nicotine. In a Sunday Instagram Stories video, the singer stated, "I’m not going to be able to change my voice." She described nicotine as being "so hard to quit" and advised anyone considering the habit, "it’s just not worth it."

Gomez, 34, acknowledged the audible change in her voice, humorously telling her followers, "It’s so stupid and it’s changed my voice. So if you guys don’t like listening to my voice, that’s totally understandable, I don’t mind. Just don’t listen to it."

She shared her experience while expressing hope for her continued sobriety from vaping. "I am really excited because I stopped [vaping] and I just hope I can keep it up. It’s really hard but I know if you are going through something, you can get through it too," she concluded.

This is not the first time Gomez has spoken about changes in her voice. In December 2025, she attributed the vocal shift to throat swelling, explaining in an Instagram Live that "I get weird. My throat kind of swells inside sometimes. That’s all. That’s good."

The singer has been open about her ongoing health challenges, including her battle with Lupus. This chronic autoimmune disease can lead to inflammation affecting various parts of the body, according to the Mayo Clinic. Gomez has also discussed experiencing weight fluctuations as a side effect of her Lupus treatment, noting in the 2023 Apple TV+ series "Dear…" that her weight would "constantly fluctuate because I would be on certain medications." She added that she felt "shamed for gaining weight because of my lupus."

Additionally, Gomez has spoken candidly about her bipolar disorder diagnosis and how she manages it within her marriage to Benny Blanco. She shared in March on her husband's podcast, "Friends Keep Secrets," that having a partner who understands and supports her through these experiences is helpful, allowing them to "gradually understand what’s happening."
