Selena Gomez and Martin Short, co-stars on the popular series "Only Murders in the Building," honored the memory of Short's late daughter, Katherine, at the Rare Impact Fund Benefit on Wednesday evening.

The event, held at the Hollywood Palladium in Los Angeles, saw Gomez unveil the inaugural Katherine Short Legacy Award. The award is named in memory of Katherine Short, who died by suicide on February 23 at the age of 42.

"Katherine was a social worker who devoted her own career to helping people through some of their hardest points," Gomez said during the ceremony. "This award will carry her name forward by honoring people who have made that same kind of commitment to their communities."

Gomez, founder of the Rare Beauty brand whose organization raises funds for youth mental health services, spoke of her long friendship with Martin Short and expressed gratitude for his presence at the event.

Short joined Gomez on stage to accept the award, sharing his grief and reflections on mental health. "It has been a very difficult year for me, needless to say," he stated. "It has been the heartbreak of our family, as you can imagine."

He continued, "Mental health and cancer, which took my wife, for example, are both diseases. They are diseases, and sometimes diseases are terminal." Short's wife, Nancy Dolman, died in 2010 after a battle with ovarian cancer.

The actor spoke candidly about Katherine's struggles with mental health issues, including borderline personality disorder, describing her dedication to her work as a clinical social worker. He emphasized the importance of open and compassionate conversations about mental health, which she championed through her profession.

"My pain about losing my daughter will always be present in my heart, and I think that’s simply because what we deeply love we can never lose, for all that we love deeply becomes part of us," Short said.

A representative for Martin Short confirmed Katherine's death in February, stating, "The Short family is devastated by this loss, and asks for privacy at this time. Katherine was beloved by all and will be remembered for the light and joy she brought into the world."

Katherine Short's death certificate confirmed the cause of death as a self-inflicted gunshot wound at her Hollywood Hills home. She is also survived by her brothers, Oliver and Henry Short.
