A security guard has been fired after an intruder entered an unauthorized area of NBC's "Today" show studios in Rockefeller Center and confronted host Craig Melvin. The incident occurred on Thursday, with surveillance video reportedly showing the guard missing the suspect, identified as Andrew Truelove.
Truelove allegedly entered the studio searching for Al Roker and shouted racial slurs before confronting Melvin. Authorities quickly intervened, and Truelove was taken into custody by the NYPD. He is now facing two hate crime charges.
On Friday morning, the "Today" hosts addressed the security breach. Melvin stated that an intruder had made their way into an unauthorized area but was "apprehended quickly" and placed under arrest. He confirmed that the show is cooperating with the NYPD investigation and expressed relief that everyone was safe. Melvin also assured viewers that he was "safe and sound" following the event.
Co-host Savannah Guthrie was not present on Friday, having announced she would be stepping away from the show for a few weeks to film a new gameshow. Melvin also left early on Friday for a previously planned vacation.
