Jennifer Hegseth, wife of Secretary of War Pete Hegseth, is facing scrutiny over payments she reportedly received from a public relations firm that has worked with Lockheed Martin, a major Pentagon contractor. Watchtower Strategy, a firm with ties to the Trump administration, paid Hegseth for consulting work last year, according to a report by Politico.
The payments, which appeared on Secretary Hegseth's annual financial disclosure, raise ethical questions due to her husband's role in overseeing defense contracts. Lockheed Martin is one of the largest defense corporations, having generated $72 billion in defense revenue last year, largely from the U.S. government. The Pentagon has awarded substantial contracts to Lockheed Martin.
Jennifer Hegseth's father was also a Lockheed Martin executive, and she has reportedly participated in important Pentagon-related meetings with her husband. While Watchtower Strategy acknowledges Jennifer's assistance in navigating conservative media, a spokesperson stated she has not interfaced with clients or provided advice on defense matters.
Former Republican Congressman Matt Gaetz publicly questioned the arrangement, stating that wives of Cabinet members should not be paid by lobbyists. He suggested that if Lloyd Austin's wife had a similar role, he would have exposed it.
The controversy emerges as Secretary Hegseth himself faces pressure following recent election results. Multiple sources have indicated that turnover within the administration is expected, and Hegseth is considered vulnerable.
A Pentagon spokesperson, Sean Parnell, stated that the department maintains a rigorous ethics framework, and that Secretary Hegseth and his wife are in full compliance with all ethics laws and regulations. He added that their focus remains on serving the nation and President Trump.
However, the situation could lead to further political action. Congressman Thomas Massie is expected to pursue impeachment proceedings against the Secretary of War, and Democrats are anticipated to launch a probe into Hegseth early next year.
