The Secret Service has investigated approximately 10,000 threats against its protectees, including President Trump, in the first half of this year, according to Secret Service Director Sean Curran. This figure represents numbers the agency has not seen in Curran's 24-year career.
"The environment has become very volatile, and that’s just across the board," Curran stated. "The threat picture and environment is as large as I’ve ever seen it." The agency is responsible for the security of about three dozen individuals, including the president, vice president, their immediate families, and those in the line of presidential succession.
Officials noted that the majority of these threats originate online. The Secret Service treats all such threats as potentially credible until investigators can determine if the subject possesses the intent, means, and ability to carry out an attack. Investigations into these threats are ongoing.
