A planned arrest for a registered sex offender in Huntsville, Missouri, took a dangerous turn when a second-story deck collapsed under nine law enforcement officers on July 21. The incident, captured on body camera footage, showed officers from the US Marshals Service, Randolph County Sheriff's Department, Moberly Police Department, and the North Missouri Drug Task Force falling to the ground as the structure gave way.
The officers were on the 400 block of Vaunita Street preparing to arrest Jacob Alexander Munoz, 26, for failing to register as a sex offender. Munoz had been convicted of possessing child pornography in July 2022, according to the Missouri State Highway Patrol Sex Offender Registry. The offense involved a victim between the ages of nine and 13 and occurred in March 2020.
Seven of the nine officers involved were treated and released from a local hospital for injuries described as 'consistent with a pretty serious fall.' These injuries included broken bones, though they were not life-threatening, according to Steven Lewis, the US Marshal for the Eastern District of Missouri. Some of the injured officers may require surgery.
Munoz was apprehended later the same day. The US Marshals Service stated that unexpected hazards can arise during enforcement operations and highlighted the team's preparedness and the fact that no firearms discharged during the fall. Lewis described the collapse as sudden, with officers falling straight down with little time to react.
According to the Missouri sex offender registry, Munoz's address was listed as the apartment building where the deck collapse occurred. A resident of the complex described the building as a hazard and a danger, noting issues with drug activity and the structural integrity of the building, which made access to three upstairs units impossible following the incident.
