Second Man Arrested in Case of Pregnant Woman Found in Burning Van

North Wales Police have arrested a second man in connection with the death of Samantha Natalie Phythian, whose body was discovered in a burning van on Gas Works Lane in Prestatyn last Sunday. A murder investigation was launched after emergency services responded to reports of a vehicle fire around 11:30 p.m.

Post-mortem examinations confirmed that Ms. Phythian, from Rhyl, was pregnant at the time of her death. The investigation has progressed with the arrest of a 47-year-old man on suspicion of conspiracy to commit arson and possession with intent to supply drugs.

Earlier, Thomas Matthew Hammond Bell, 38, was charged with Ms. Phythian's murder. Bell appeared in Mold Crown Court via video link on Friday and was remanded in custody. During the hearing, Judge Geraint Walters stated that the victim was believed to be alive when the van fire began, noting that the defendant's case is that he did not start the fire. The judge emphasized that the victim "was alive at the time, or at least sufficiently alive, and she was killed as a result of the arson itself."

A plea and trial preparation hearing is scheduled for January, with a potential trial date set for three weeks in April next year.

In a statement, Ms. Phythian's family described her as a "much-loved mum, daughter, sister, auntie and friend." They added, "Her tragic and untimely death has left her family and friends devastated, struggling to come to terms with the loss of someone who meant so much to so many." The family urged the public to be mindful and respectful of rumors circulating on social media during this difficult time.

Detective Chief Inspector Zoie Dunkerley echoed these sentiments, stating, "My thoughts are with Sammi's family and friends." She also appealed to the community to avoid commenting in ways that could cause further distress to the family or interfere with the ongoing legal proceedings.

Councillor Gerry Frobisher of Prestatyn Town Council described the incident as unprecedented in the town, calling it an "isolated incident" and assuring that Prestatyn is a safe place. He extended his condolences to Ms. Phythian's family and friends.
