Second Man Arrested in Burning Van Case; Victim Was Pregnant
Authorities have arrested a second man in connection with the death of a pregnant woman whose body was found in a burning van, with investigators believing she may have been alive when the vehicle was set alight.
A 47-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of conspiracy to commit arson and possession with intent to supply drugs, following the discovery of Samantha Natalie Phythian's body. Phythian, 35, was found in a burning van on Gas Works Lane in Prestatyn, North Wales, around 11:30 p.m. last Sunday.
North Wales Police confirmed that post-mortem examinations revealed Phythian was pregnant at the time of her death. A murder investigation was subsequently launched.
Thomas Matthew Bell, 38, has been charged with Phythian's murder. He appeared at Mold Crown Court on Friday via videolink and was remanded in custody. During the hearing, Judge Geraint Walters stated that it is believed the victim was alive when the van fire started, and the defendant's defense is that he did not initiate the blaze. The judge noted, "The victim was alive at the time, or at least sufficiently alive, and she was killed as a result of the arson itself."
The case was adjourned to January for a plea and trial preparation hearing, with a potential trial date scheduled for three weeks in April next year.
In a tribute, Phythian's family described her as a "much-loved mum, daughter, sister, auntie and friend." They expressed their devastation at her "tragic and untimely death" and the pain of losing her in such circumstances. The family requested that the public be mindful and respectful of rumors circulating on social media during this difficult time.
Detective Chief Inspector Zoie Dunkerley echoed the family's sentiments and urged the community to refrain from commenting in ways that could cause further distress or interfere with the ongoing legal proceedings.
Councillor Gerry Frobisher of Prestatyn Town Council stated that such an incident is unprecedented in the town and is considered isolated. He extended his condolences to the family and friends of the deceased, reaffirming that Prestatyn is a safe place.
