Second Lady Usha Vance Stumbles on Helicopter Stairs While Carrying Infant Son
Vice President JD Vance's wife regained her balance with her nine-week-old son strapped to her chest.
Second Lady Usha Vance stumbled on the steps of the vice presidential helicopter on Monday, October 5, 2026, while carrying her nine-week-old son, Alec Neel Vance. She was reportedly holding the infant in a carrier with a diaper bag over her shoulder when she appeared to miss a step near the bottom of the stairs at Joint Base Andrews.
Four service members on the tarmac witnessed the moment as Vance reached for the second railing and regained her balance. Shortly after, Vice President JD Vance emerged from the helicopter with their 4-year-old daughter, Mirabel, and met his wife at the bottom of the stairs.
The Vance family was preparing to travel to Alaska, where the Vice President was scheduled to campaign for Sen. Dan Sullivan (R-Alaska). "As you probably saw, Usha and a couple of the kids are joining," Vice President Vance told reporters. "This is Usha’s 50th state, which is why we are bringing a nine-week-old baby on a seven-and-a-half-hour flight to Alaska."
He added, "So if I give a speech tonight and I looked haggard and stressed out, that’s exactly why."
