Second Lady Usha Vance has shared her positive experience adjusting to life with the couple's fourth child, Alec Neel Vance, emphasizing a strengthened family dynamic and the older children's enthusiasm for their new brother.

Alec Neel Vance was born on Sunday, July 19, at Walter Reed National Medical Center in Bethesda, Maryland. In her first interview since the birth, Usha Vance told Fox News Digital that the initial weeks have brought the family closer together. "It's been really lovely so far. I'm really glad that we took this plunge," she said.

She highlighted the older children's attentiveness to Alec, noting their eagerness to participate in caregiving. "One of the things that has just been beautiful to see is how excited my older kids are about their new brother. They're always fighting over holding him," Vance said, adding that they actively assist with diaper changes and clothing changes, and enjoy entertaining the infant.

The Vances' children are Ewan, 9; Vivek, 6; Mirabel, 4; and newborn Alec. A key challenge, Vance explained, has been ensuring each of the older children receives individual attention amidst their busy schedules. To address this, the family has made a point of engaging in daily outings since returning from the hospital, dedicating specific days to each child.

"For example, we go out [of the residence] and do something every day. And we've been doing that since the day we came home from the hospital. So yesterday was my middle child's day, and we went to the bookstore, we went to lunch — we did a quick return at a shop, and the whole time, it was just really special," she recounted.

Vance admitted to experiencing "all sorts of angst" before deciding to have a fourth child but expressed overwhelming joy with the outcome. "I'm really glad that we decided to move into the unknown and do something that felt like a little bit of a risk to a settled and happy family dynamic because it's only become happier," she stated.

Vance announced Alec's birth in July alongside photos of the bundle of joy and their complete family

Usha Vance announced Alec's birth in July via social media, sharing photos and thanking well-wishers. "Thank you for all the good wishes as we settle into life as a family of six," she wrote. "Meet Alec — and enjoy these attempts at taking a decent family photo with four kids!"

President Donald Trump congratulated the family on social media, sharing one of the first photos of the newborn, with his older brother Vivek holding him. Alec's birth marks a significant historical moment, as it is the first time in 156 years that a sitting vice president has welcomed a child while in office. The last such occurrence was in 1870, when Schuyler Colfax, Vice President under Ulysses S. Grant, had a son.

The couple had initially announced their expectation of a fourth child in January. In his memoir, Vance had previously written about their decision to not have more children due to public life pressures, but a shift in perspective for Usha followed the assassination of a close friend. Vance wrote, "Something changed for Usha, and not long after we buried my friend, she became pregnant with our fourth child, a boy. One life was stolen from us, but another was given."
