Vice President JD Vance and Second Lady Usha Vance have shared the first photographs of their newborn son, Alec Neel Vance, marking the arrival of the couple's fourth child and the first time in 156 years a sitting vice president has welcomed a child while in office.
Second Lady Usha Vance posted three images on social media Friday, accompanied by a message expressing gratitude for well wishes as the family adjusts to life as a family of six. "Meet Alec — and enjoy these attempts at taking a decent family photo with four kids!" she wrote.
The images depict the family in coordinated outfits, a close-up of the infant Alec, and siblings Vivek, 6, and Mirabel, 4, interacting with their new brother. The couple's older children are Ewan, 9, and Vivek, 6.
Alec Neel Vance was born on Sunday, July 19, at Walter Reed National Medical Center in Bethesda, Maryland. The birth is a notable event, as the last incumbent Second Family to welcome a newborn was in 1870, when Schuyler Colfax, Vice President under Ulysses S. Grant, and his wife Ellen had a son.
Former President Trump offered congratulations on social media Monday, sharing an image of Vivek holding his new brother. The Vances first announced they were expecting their fourth child in January. In his memoir, Vice President Vance wrote that he and his wife had initially decided against having more children due to the demands of public life, but that a shift in Usha's perspective following the assassination of a close friend influenced their decision.
Usha Vance, 40, and JD Vance, 41, are now parents to Ewan, 9; Vivek, 6; Mirabel, 4; and Alec. A source close to the family confirmed that this has been a joyous period for them as they embrace their expanded family.
