Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy has articulated his perspective on college admissions and parental guidance, stating that his primary responsibility is to instill strong moral and religious values in his children, rather than solely focusing on securing admission to prestigious universities like Harvard. Duffy shared his views in a discussion about his family's experience visiting Harvard as part of a YouTube series, "The Great America Road Trip."

Duffy explained that he had reservations about institutions like Harvard, suggesting they could undermine the values instilled in his children. He cited an experience in 2020 where his daughter Evita faced criticism at the University of Chicago for holding conservative views. This led him and his wife to resolve to only fund colleges they approved, a list that initially excluded Harvard due to concerns about its perceived hostility to free speech, lack of ideological diversity, and "woke antics."

During their visit to Harvard, the family met with Father Nathaniel Sanders, the undergraduate Catholic chaplain. Duffy noted the strength of the Catholic student community at Harvard and the chaplain's observation that students with a strong sense of self and faith can see those qualities flourish in such an environment. This interaction shifted Duffy's perspective, leading him to believe that some Christian students can navigate challenging academic settings, provided they have a robust religious community for support.

He asserted that conservatives should not abandon elite institutions but rather seek to populate them with like-minded students and faculty. Duffy also suggested measures such as cutting federal funding to universities with critical theory curricula, demanding ideological diversity in hiring, and revoking tax-exempt status from universities with large endowments.

Ultimately, Duffy and his wife decided to support their daughter Paloma's potential attendance at Harvard if she were accepted, contingent on their assessment of her ability to thrive in such an environment. He emphasized that his role as a father includes protecting his daughter's soul, a duty he does not intend to apologize for, regardless of public criticism. Duffy also highlighted the importance of family road trips as a means for parents to transmit values, faith, and identity to their children, counteracting the perceived fragmentation caused by modern institutions and technology.
