SEC Network Crew Reacts to Chase Daniel's 'Cocktober' Remark
Analyst Chase Daniel's unconventional reasoning for South Carolina's favored status against Tennessee elicits a strong reaction from Tim Tebow and other commentators.
SEC Network analyst Chase Daniel offered a unique justification for South Carolina's favored position against No. 11 Tennessee: the arrival of "Cocktober." Daniel, a former Missouri quarterback, suggested on a pregame panel that the timing of the month is a significant factor for the Gamecocks.
"We’re sitting here in the meetings yesterday, we’re talking about this game, and we’re all thinking like, ‘Hey, why in the world does Vegas have South Carolina favored?’" Daniel said. "Well, boys, you know what it is, right? It’s Cocktober. It is Cocktober, and they are coming out for it all."
Daniel's remark prompted an immediate and noticeable reaction from his SEC Network colleagues, including former Heisman Trophy winner Tim Tebow. Video of the panel's exchange circulated on social media, highlighting the commentators' struggles to maintain composure.
South Carolina entered the game as a 2.5-point favorite over the Volunteers. The Gamecocks' recent performance, including an upset victory over Florida in Gainesville, contributed to their status. Daniel pointed to quarterback LaNorris Sellers' performance in October, noting his confidence and statistics.
Sellers has thrown for 505 yards and six touchdowns in October, completing over 60% of his passes. He earned SEC Offensive Player of the Week honors for his outing against Florida, where he accounted for five total touchdowns.
"We forget about Sandstorm, the home environment. They whipped Florida, all these things. [quarterback] LaNorris Sellers — to me, you look at how he played two weeks ago in Cocktober. It was good," Daniel stated.
Despite a 1-1 record in October entering the game, South Carolina ranked second in the SEC in total offense and ninth in total defense, lending some weight to Daniel's unconventional reasoning.
Tennessee, meanwhile, came into the matchup with its own momentum, having defeated No. 13 Alabama the previous week. The Volunteers are also led by freshman quarterback George MacIntyre.
Daniel advised that for South Carolina to maintain its positive trajectory, they would need to manage the defensive line. "If you can figure out [defensive tackle] Xavier Gilliam up front, if you can block him and get rid of the football early enough…you can absolutely continue Cocktober, going into next weekend at Halloween," he said.
