A series of sightings in Seattle has captivated residents and fueled speculation about a mysterious, unusually shaped animal. The creature, described as small and gray with a rounded body, disproportionately long legs, and a shortened frame, has been observed in the Ballard neighborhood. Videos of the animal have circulated widely online, prompting comparisons to cryptids and genetically altered beings.
Wildlife experts, however, believe the animal is a raccoon suffering from short spine syndrome, a rare congenital condition. This condition affects the development of the vertebrae, causing sections to fuse together and resulting in a severely shortened spine while the limbs continue to grow normally.
One of the most recent public sightings occurred when Kiana Hall and her partner observed the animal near a Ballard Goodwill. Hall initially mistook it for a cat before witnessing its peculiar movements, including climbing stairs and disappearing over a fence. Upon closer inspection of its facial markings, she identified it as a raccoon.
Hall posted a video of the animal online, humorously naming it Jimothy. The clip quickly gained millions of views, with many commenters sharing their theories about its appearance. The viral footage also connected with other local residents who recognized the animal from previous encounters.
One Ballard resident shared on Reddit that they had observed the same raccoon in their backyard multiple times over the past year. This resident recalled the raccoon, which they had also nicknamed Jimothy, appearing as a baby that resembled a "raccoon-colored Koosh ball." The resident noted that the raccoon was often carried by its mother and siblings due to its clumsiness.
Marcie Logsdon, an associate professor at Washington State University’s Veterinary Teaching Hospital, indicated to the Seattle Times that the animal was likely born earlier this year. Logsdon added that Jimothy appeared to be in good health and showed signs that he could survive in the wild.
The resident who recalled Jimothy's early life mentioned that the raccoon's family disappeared after nearby cedar trees were cut down about eight months prior. They next saw Jimothy unexpectedly darting in front of an Uber several blocks away from where it was born. The resident expressed happiness at seeing Jimothy "still kicking" and receiving attention from the neighborhood.
