Seattle Mayor Katie Wilson Faces Scrutiny Over Shooting Response, Leaked Texts Reveal Peer Doubt
Texts between Washington Governor Bob Ferguson and Congresswoman Pramila Jayapal show concerns about Mayor Wilson's handling of a deadly mass shooting.
Seattle Mayor Katie Wilson is facing renewed criticism following the leak of text messages exchanged between Washington Governor Bob Ferguson and U.S. Representative Pramila Jayapal. The messages, concerning the city's response to a deadly mass shooting at the July Bite of Seattle festival, revealed doubts from fellow Democratic officials about Wilson's leadership.
The July 26 incident, a shootout between rival gang members near the Space Needle, resulted in three fatalities and four injuries, causing panic among thousands of attendees. Wilson's administration has been particularly scrutinized for what critics describe as a five-hour delay in releasing public information following the event.
Newly surfaced texts indicate that as the shooting unfolded, Congresswoman Jayapal expressed her concerns to Governor Ferguson. "I'm not confident she knows what she is doing," Jayapal texted, questioning whether elected officials should attend the scene and suggesting a coordinated briefing with the police chief. Ferguson indicated he was also monitoring the situation and had spoken with Wilson.
Jayapal later stated in a public release that her texts reflected a desire for swift and transparent public communication, particularly when significant information had not yet been shared. She acknowledged that Wilson had also recognized the communication lapse and that an independent review was underway.
Further details emerged from messages between Ferguson and Wilson, where the mayor informed the governor around 7:41 p.m. that a city conference call was being organized and a public briefing was likely that night. Ferguson responded he could be available by 9 p.m., though the press conference ultimately occurred much later.
In contrast to the mayor's office's initial statements, which reportedly blamed the Seattle Police Department for the information delay and led to the dismissal of Chief Shon Barnes, police officials have presented a different timeline. Assistant Seattle Police Chief Tyrone Davis informed the city council that he was prepared to hold a press conference at 7:30 p.m., but was instructed to wait for Mayor Wilson's presence. Davis stated that the information available at 7:30 p.m. would have been the same as what was presented at the 11 p.m. press conference, emphasizing the stability of the situation and the police department's readiness.
The public was eventually informed that the shooting was likely gang-related and not a targeted attack, and that the Seattle Center campus was secure. The delayed press conference occurred with Governor Ferguson and Representative Jayapal present. Jayapal clarified that any delay in waiting for her and the governor's arrival was minimal, on the order of minutes, and that she had been under the impression that the police department was regularly briefing the public.
