Seattle Mayor Katie Wilson has named Deputy Chief Andre Sayles as the interim police chief, a decision announced Friday following the resignation of Chief Shon Barnes. Barnes stepped down after a deadly shooting at the Bite of Seattle food festival over the weekend.

Wilson stated that Sayles was chosen because of his prior experience as a police chief in Wisconsin, where she said he led with a community-focused approach that strengthened public safety and community trust. "He has earned the respect of our police force in his time here, and that is exactly what we need right now," Wilson said during a news conference.

The fatal shooting occurred Sunday at Seattle Center, resulting in two deaths and four injuries. Barnes described the incident as "targeted" and "gang-related," but confirmed the victims were not connected to the suspects. An arrest has been made, and one individual believed to be involved has died.

Barnes submitted his resignation Thursday, stating through his attorney that Wilson had requested it and that he believed it was the best path forward for the city. In a previous statement, Wilson expressed gratitude for Barnes' service and acknowledged the dedication and professionalism of the Seattle Police Department officers.

Sayles addressed the recent events, acknowledging the difficult week for the department and the city. He committed to uniting the force with a focus on service, pride, and dedication. The investigation into the Seattle Center shooting remains a top priority, and Sayles confirmed the department is actively seeking any additional suspects. In response to community concerns about safety at public gatherings, the department will increase staffing at upcoming major summer events.

Mayor Wilson also indicated that a search for a permanent police chief would begin, emphasizing a desire for a leader who drives operational excellence and organizational change. She plans to form a search committee with representatives from diverse communities across the city to ensure community input in the selection process. The ideal candidate, Wilson noted, should be able to lead the department effectively, build relationships within the force and the community, and practice clear communication during stressful situations.
