Rescuers continued to search Wednesday for three people missing after a boat carrying passengers for a memorial service sank in San Francisco Bay. The incident, which occurred Tuesday afternoon near Alcatraz Island, resulted in one confirmed fatality and 16 individuals being rescued.
A dog on board also died. The water temperature in the bay averages around 59 degrees Fahrenheit (15 degrees Celsius) in July, according to the Pacific Open Water Swim Company.
The 50-foot, multi-level cabin cruiser was about 600 yards from Alcatraz when it took on water and capsized. Authorities received the emergency call just after 3:30 p.m. Tuesday. A captain of another boat who responded to the scene reported choppy waves at the time.
When rescue crews arrived, the vessel's motor was still running and leaking fuel. Fire department boats were still searching the area Wednesday morning. By Tuesday evening, search efforts had extended to the open ocean west of the Golden Gate Bridge, involving divers, helicopters, and multiple vessels.
All rescued individuals were taken to the Gashouse Cove Marina in San Francisco. The vessel was believed to have launched from near the St. Francis Yacht Club.
