Sean Payton reportedly considered a plan that would have seen Bill Belichick step into the head coaching role for the Denver Broncos in 2024, with Payton himself serving as an assistant coach. The unconventional proposal, which did not come to fruition, was aimed at providing Belichick with the opportunity to break Don Shula's all-time NFL coaching wins record.
At the conclusion of the 2023 NFL season, Belichick ranked second in career wins with 333, trailing Shula's record of 347. Payton believed that under his proposed arrangement, Belichick could achieve the necessary 15 victories to set a new record.
According to ESPN, Payton contemplated presenting this idea to Broncos owner Greg Penner. However, the plan was ultimately deemed "too complicated" and did not advance. A multi-year commitment might have been required for Belichick to secure the 15 wins needed to surpass Shula.
Despite the proposal not becoming a reality, the potential consideration highlights the strong existing relationship between Payton and Belichick. Both coaches share a history of working under mentor Bill Parcells early in their careers.
Belichick, who spent 24 seasons as the Patriots' head coach, built a significant legacy that includes six Super Bowl championships, three Coach of the Year awards, and numerous playoff appearances. He is widely recognized for his role in establishing a dynasty with quarterback Tom Brady.
Payton's hypothetical scenario involved Belichick taking over the Broncos coaching position after the team's 8-9 record in the 2023 season, a year marked by controversy surrounding quarterback Russell Wilson and a slow start. Payton, in his first season with the Broncos, guided the team to a 10-7 record in 2023, marking their first playoff appearance in nine years. The team subsequently reached the AFC Championship game in 2024 with a 14-3 record and entered the 2026 season with Super Bowl aspirations.
