Sean McVay Expresses Regret Over Conservative Play Call in Rams' Overtime Loss
Head coach Sean McVay calls himself 'sick' after a missed field goal attempt sealed the Rams' fate against the Bills.
Los Angeles Rams head coach Sean McVay expressed deep regret following his team's 37-34 overtime loss to the Buffalo Bills on Monday night. The loss was particularly painful due to a conservative play call on a crucial third-down situation in overtime.
After Bills running back James Cook fumbled the ball to start overtime, the Rams gained possession with a chance to win. Facing a third-and-5 from the Bills' 30-yard line, the Rams opted for a running play with Kyren Williams, setting up a 48-yard field goal attempt for kicker Harrison Mevis. Mevis, who had previously missed a 50-yard attempt in regulation, had his kick blocked by Bills edge rusher Greg Rousseau. This pivotal moment allowed the Bills, led by quarterback Josh Allen, to drive down the field for the game-winning 45-yard field goal by Tyler Bass.
McVay took full responsibility for the outcome, stating his frustration with the lack of offensive aggression on that critical third down. "I’m sick right now with myself," McVay told reporters after the game. "I’m sick that we came up short. I’ll be regretting kicking that and not having a better call to be able to go for it on third down and go to fourth, or whatever it was. That’s on me."
The Rams' special teams have been a recurring issue, dating back to a similar loss against the Eagles last season due to a blocked field goal. Despite the addition of new special teams coordinator Bobby Ventrone, the unit continues to struggle with costly mistakes.
The defeat overshadowed a strong offensive performance by the Rams, including a 383-yard, three-touchdown game from quarterback Matthew Stafford and a record-breaking 17-reception, 138-yard, one-touchdown performance by Puka Nacua.
For the Bills, the victory improved their record to 4-1 under head coach Joe Brady, bolstered by an impressive performance from quarterback Josh Allen, who threw for 210 yards and a touchdown while rushing for 121 yards and another score. The Rams, now at 2-3, face a challenging road ahead in a competitive NFC West division.
