Los Angeles Rams head coach Sean McVay acknowledged a struggle with focus during a "60 Minutes" interview, which aired Sunday. The interview, taped earlier in the training camp, occurred shortly before the Rams' significant loss to the San Francisco 49ers in Melbourne, Australia.
McVay told interviewer Jon Wertheim that he was not "in a good place" following practice sessions, stating, "Success is never linear." He described his mindset as experiencing "up and down" feelings and his efforts to quickly recover from negative moments. When asked if he experiences such moments, McVay responded, "All the time."
During the interview itself, McVay admitted to feeling unfocused, even telling Wertheim, "I feel rude." He added, "You deserve more attention than what I’m capable of giving right now, and I feel bad about that."
The interview aired two days after the Rams' 27-7 defeat to the 49ers. This season marks McVay's ninth as an NFL head coach. Following his Super Bowl victory with the Rams in 2022 and being named NFL coach of the year in 2017, significant expectations have surrounded the team, particularly after acquiring Myles Garrett and re-signing Aaron Donald prior to the season.
An anonymous coach noted to The Athletic that teams assembled with extensive talent, often referred to as "dream teams," can face immense pressure to achieve perfection, which can be complicated by the human element.
