Sean Lennon Clarifies John Lennon's Estate Distribution to Brothers
Sean Lennon stated that he and his brother Julian received equal inheritances from their father's estate.
Sean Lennon has publicly addressed speculation regarding the division of his father John Lennon's estate, confirming that both he and his brother, Julian Lennon, received equal inheritances. The clarification came in response to a social media user's claim that one brother had been "abandoned by his famous Dad" while the other was "closely attended to" and received the majority of the estate.
Responding directly to the post, Sean Lennon wrote, "Julian and I inherited the same amount from our dad. Our trusts were equal." He further elaborated that Julian's inheritance was "slightly more, but negligibly so."
John Lennon, a founding member of The Beatles, had an estimated net worth of $200 million at the time of his death in 1980. He was fatally shot by Mark David Chapman.
Sean, whose mother is John Lennon's second wife Yoko Ono, and Julian, born to Lennon and his first wife Cynthia Powell, appear to maintain a close relationship. Sean recently celebrated his 51st birthday, sharing a photo of himself and Julian by a lake, captioning it, "Had a great bday with my brother…"
Julian also expressed birthday wishes to his younger brother, posting a split image of Sean and their father. In a previous interview, Julian described his relationship with Sean as strong, stating they "get on like a house on fire" and are "best buddies."
Sean has previously used social media to counter rumors of friction between the brothers. In 2025, he shared a throwback photo from the 1986 Rock and Roll Hall of Fame induction ceremony for Elvis Presley, writing, "Here, we do not accept comparisons and erroneous creations of fights about two people that John Lennon loved the most: his children."
