Seahawks Nix Joe Mixon Signing After Physical Exam

The Seattle Seahawks have reversed their decision to sign running back Joe Mixon, with the team opting not to add the former Pro Bowl player to their practice squad after he underwent a physical. The move casts doubt on Mixon's immediate future in the NFL.

Mixon had been slated to join the Seahawks following a workout, with head coach Mike Macdonald previously stating the player was "going through the process." However, the team's decision to not proceed after the physical suggests potential health issues may be a factor.

The 30-year-old Mixon spent the entire previous season sidelined with a mysterious foot injury. This absence led to speculation over the summer that his NFL career might be over. KPRC reporter Aaron Wilson noted in July that while Mixon had not filed retirement papers, he had informed former Bengals teammates of his career's end, though some hope for his return persisted.

In his 2024 season with the Texans, Mixon recorded 1,016 rushing yards, 309 receiving yards, and 12 total touchdowns across 14 games. He also contributed 194 rushing yards and two touchdowns in the playoffs that year. Prior to that, the 2017 second-round pick accumulated 6,412 rushing yards and 52 total touchdowns during his tenure with the Cincinnati Bengals.

The Seahawks' running back depth has been impacted by recent departures and injuries. Super Bowl MVP Kenneth Walker was released to join the Chiefs in free agency, and rookie Jadarian Price is on injured reserve with a chest injury. Additionally, Zach Charbonnet is still recovering from a torn ACL sustained in the team's divisional-round playoff game last January.
