Seahawks Coach Backs Quarterback Sam Darnold Amidst Interception Concerns

Seattle Seahawks head coach Mike Macdonald expressed confidence in starting quarterback Sam Darnold following a 17-14 overtime loss to the Denver Broncos. Despite Darnold throwing two interceptions in the game and accumulating a league-leading seven interceptions through five games this season, Macdonald affirmed his support.

"I think we have a lot of faith in Sam," Macdonald stated. "Sam’s played great football for us. He’s done a lot of great things this year. We’ve obviously turned the ball over more than we want to. I feel like there’s things on our end that can help him play better football. And I think he’s definitely part of the solution, rather than the opposite."

Darnold completed 52.9 percent of his passes against the Broncos, contributing to the Seahawks' offensive struggles. His current passer rating stands at 77.4, a decrease from his 99.1 rating last season. The team's offense has seen a dip in efficiency, averaging 5.3 yards per play this season compared to 5.8 yards per play in the previous year, which ranked among the top five in the league.

Backup quarterback Drew Lock has shown flashes of success in limited action. He took over for Darnold after a Week 1 glute injury and has since thrown four touchdowns without an interception, completing over 70 percent of his passes. Lock led the Seahawks to a decisive 31-7 victory over the Cardinals in Week 2, which has been noted as one of the team's best offensive performances of the season.

The Seahawks, currently below .500, are preparing to host the Kansas City Chiefs next Sunday night in hopes of improving their record.
