Seahawks Coach Apologizes to Payton Over Spygate-Type Accusations
Mike Macdonald expresses regret for making the dispute between the Seahawks and Broncos public.
Seattle Seahawks coach Mike Macdonald has apologized to Denver Broncos coach Sean Payton following a public dispute involving accusations of cheating and threats of NFL investigations. Macdonald stated that his apology was for the situation becoming public, which he did not intend.
Macdonald shared the details of the dispute on the podcast "In Depth With Graham Bensigner." The controversy stemmed from allegations that the Seahawks used fan-sourced video of Broncos training camp practices in 2024 to scout them. Macdonald stated that he shared the story without expecting it to become public.
According to Macdonald, Payton discovered the Seahawks had obtained plays from their training camp and reacted strongly, threatening to report the Seahawks to the NFL for violating filming rules, similar to the Spygate scandal. Macdonald countered by threatening a lawsuit if Payton pursued the accusations, as the Seahawks maintained they did not cheat.
"It's something that I didn't intend for public use but you know, it just felt like it was the most appropriate thing to reach out to Sean and really just apologize to him for having that end up being public where it wasn't meant to," Macdonald said. "You're kind of, something that they have to deal with in real time that wasn't really on their end. So that's really where you're like, 'Crap!'"
Macdonald acknowledged that he has learned a lesson from the incident. "It's a lesson learned," he said. "You know, honestly, I got to be better in that moment for understanding, like, I'm responsible for what I say, really, no matter the circumstance."
Despite the initial friction, Macdonald expressed respect for Payton and indicated that the relationship between the coaches has improved. "Sean was great," Macdonald commented. "I'll say, I respect the heck out of him and his program. Always have. He's a phenomenal football coach. It's been it's been great to get to know him at the owners meetings the last couple years. And and he was awesome. So I know we're both looking forward to moving forward from it, but I really appreciate how he handled it."
