Greedy seagulls are costing Britons an estimated £171 million annually through stolen or spoiled meals, according to a report by the price comparison site Compare the Market. Nearly three-quarters of Britons surveyed reported being targeted by seagulls, highlighting the widespread nature of these food raids.

The study, dubbed 'The Great Greedy Gull Index,' found that the average cost of a single seagull food theft is £5.50, with classic seaside fare like fish and chips being the most frequent target. This ongoing issue has led many to alter their dining habits outdoors.

More than three-quarters of those surveyed indicated they have changed where or how they eat al fresco in an attempt to deter the birds. A significant portion, nearly one-third of respondents, reported abandoning or sacrificing their food entirely to avoid confrontation with the opportunistic gulls.

In response to the findings, Compare the Market has launched what it claims is the UK's first 'Gull Guarantee.' For one day only at Peter's Fish Factory in Margate, Kent, customers whose fish and chips are stolen by a seagull will receive a free replacement portion. The company has allocated £1,000 to cover the costs associated with this promotion.
